About
My name is Tova Raykin, and I like to cook.
From a young age, growing up in Sydney, Australia, I watched my Lithuanian father – a jack-of-all-trades citizen of the world, cook in the kitchen. He had spent time in Switzerland and France, working in kitchens, and his style of cooking was very much old world Jewish food meets crude french techniques. One of the things that he did best was waste nothing.
Those early years were spent learning how to reuse everything from potato water to onion skins. And then promptly forgotten.
More recently, I moved to New York City and I was suddenly given more restaurant and instant delivery options than ever before. And as the recession hit, that novelty gave way to cooking at home, and trying to be smart about what I cook and eat. Those lessons taught years ago started to become valuable in ways I never imagined.
So, I’ve made it my goal to eliminate waste and leftovers in the kitchen wherever possible, and reuse whatever I possibly can. This website was created with that philosophy in mind – simple tips, tricks and ideas that I have begun thinking about in an effort to avoid that dreaded weekly fridge-to-trash cycle. If you want to think intelligently about what you have, what you buy, what you need to use – and use your freezer wherever possible, you can join me in reducing or even eliminating all that wasted food and money.
For the overview on how I’m doing it, check out the philosophy for some simple tips and tricks to get started.
